somebodyloveme I CAN BE BEAUTIFUL IF ONLY YOU'D GIVE ME A CHANCE TAG:THEODORE JOHN ABBOTT Word count: lazy
Melody took a deep breath before making her way down the narrow aisle on the plane. Flying always made her nervous, and this time was no exception. Her suitcase snagged on an armrest, causing her to fall to the side slightly and bump into someone already sitting down. "Sorry," she mumbled shyly before continuing to her seat. In the middle of the aisle she looked to her right and found her seat. But just to make sure it was the right one, she glanced at her ticket. She'd been correct; and she had a window seat. When she was little she used to love the window seat, but now she wasn't so sure about it. Maybe the person sitting next to her would want to switch, but if not, she'd manage. After hauling her suitcase into the overhead bin Melody sat down in her seat and put her purse under the seat in front of her. She closed her eyes and took another deep breath to try and relax. She got out her phone and sent a quick text to her parents letting them know she was on the plane; she hadn't expected swift replies of "be safe! love you!" to come so swiftly. Deciding that music might help, Ariel put on her headphones and began listening to some light music. It was difficult to not look at the people passing by while looking for their seats, but one person in particular caught her attention.
Whoever this man was, Melody wanted to know more about him. Call her romantic, but he had to be the most handsome man she'd ever seen. She couldn't be sure, but it appeared as though they'd made eye contact, which caused her to blush and quickly look away. Well, this was proving to be a distraction from her nerves. She took out a Skymall magazine and began flipping through it, trying not to stare at the man she hoped would be sitting next to her.

Teddy couldn't believe he was actually doing this right now. Before this year he had never left England. Now he had travelled to the States and would soon board a plane headed for the Bahamas. Surely the man had lost his mind? This homebody who more than happy sitting behind the counter, helping customers find good books to read. Theodore was never one for vacations. He didn't think there was anywhere that could possibly be better than his store or his comfortable flat in the heart of London. Visiting America proved that for him. While he liked his parents' new home and enjoyed seeing the sights, he knew he'd never move here. London was where he belonged. When he won the trip for a week in the Bahamas he was going to give it away to his mom and dad, but both of them told him he was crazy to pass up such an opportunity. He supposed they were right. This was, after all, the first time he had actually won something in his life before. So, instead of ignoring it, he took the prize and planned on having fun.
He was not particularly fond of heights, nor was he fond of flying. On the flight over from London, he had to close his eyes during take off. After a good half hour, he had adjusted to the pressure. Still, he felt uncomfortable, but at least he could manage. As he packed his bags, he realized he'd have to sit on a plane for another few hours. He let out an exasperated sigh, and prepared himself for another uncomfortable journey up in the air. His bags were packed with many books he planned to read on the beach along with a few things to wear and a writing pad. He only needed a small suitcase. Being a simple man, there were not many things he needed to make him happy.
Before departing his parents' house, he gave them a warm hug. He'd be back to say a final goodbye before going back to London after this vacation. Once the goodbyes were said, he got into his car and drove off to the airport. He passed through the lines quickly, which was fairly surprising. Soon he was boarding the plane. He walked through the aisles, searching for his seat. He finally found it. His eyes locked onto the woman who would be his seat buddy for the long trip. She was rather attractive, which probably wasn't good for Teddy. He was never good around beautiful women. They made him nervous, and he never knew what to say. Awkwardly, he opened up the overhead and loaded his carry on. "Hi," he said, sitting down next to the girl. He noticed she had headphones on, realizing she probably hadn't even heard his silent greeting. He cleared his throat. "Uhm, my name's Teddy," he said, making eye contact this time.

somebodyloveme I CAN BE BEAUTIFUL IF ONLY YOU'D GIVE ME A CHANCE TAG:THEODORE JOHN ABBOTT Word count: lazy internal thought
Her music wasn't too loud so it had faintly sounded like the man had said hi. Melody told herself it was just her imagination and tried to focus on the magazine, but it wasn't working. Now she was certain she'd heard something. Her eyes moved to look at the man on her right and she started inside when she saw he was looking right back. Oh- he was talking now. No way. An adorable name to match his looks? And he was British!? He couldn't be real. She'd never tell him that, though- especially that his name was adorable. She wasn't certain he'd take that as a compliment. A reply was about to come out of her mouth before she remembered her headphones were still on. "Oh- my headphones are still on. This is awkward. Sorry about that. And not you awkward, I'm awkward -You're gorgeous-," she said as she fumbled to get her headphones off. She inwardly sighed. There went any chance of coming off as cool, calm, and collected. Even mysterious. Despite wanting desperately to be a confident woman who wasn't intimidated by a good looking man, that just wasn't who she was. "I'm Melody. It's nice to meet you, Teddy," she replied with a shy smile. 'Like the president,' she thought to herself. She offered her hand for a handshake. "It's nice to see there are people out there who still introduce themselves." Melody was so used to people expecting her to know them; especially a lot of the rich ones.
A Colombian accent came on the intercom system and announced they would be taking off shortly. After it stopped, Melody wondered if she should say something again. Would Teddy want to be left alone during the ride? A lot of people hated plane conversations. Melody didn't mind them since they took her mind off the fact that she was in a plane. Another conflict: should she just stay quiet? If she did that, she'd feel guilty- like she should have shown that she was willing to talk. "Okay, I'll just come right out with it. Do you like to talk during plane rides? I'm fine with talking or not talking. I just need to make sure of what bothers you before I continue." It was obvious that had been difficult to ask, but she was sincere. If she let the opportunity to speak to someone like Teddy pass by, she'd always regret it. This would most likely be the only time they ever saw each other.

He settled down in his seat, his bright blue eyes still firmly locked on the girl. Hopefully this wasn't too awkward. Teddy always feared he was being too awkward around people, especially members of the opposite sex. This girl just happened to be really pretty as well, which made him extra nervous. A light blush mottled his cheeks at her words. Apparently he wasn't the only person who was socially awkward. This was going to be an amusing plane ride, he could feel it. But he was almost happy that this girl wasn't a social butterfly. He didn't know if he'd be able to handle that. Plus, there was something endearing about her awkwardness. Teddy gave her a kind smile and laughed. "It's quite alright," he said. Most people these days did not bother to introduce themselves. This girl was probably not used to such interactions, especially on airplanes. On his way to America from London, his compartment mate had not bothered to introduce himself. The whole trip was spent in silence. Teddy had read a book while the other man was on his I-pad.
Teddy shook the girl's--Melody's--hand firmly. "It's nice to meet you, Melody," he said, nearly introducing himself again to her. Thankfully, he caught himself. Boy would that have been awkward. He laughed nervously at her comment. "Yeah. I just feel like it's the polite thing to do," he said. Teddy had been brought up by good parents. He was taught to be courteous to all people, and that meant holding doors open, saying please and thank you, and introducing yourself to people you'd be spending hours on a plane with. He tried to abide by those rules, for he liked to think of himself as the dying breed called a "gentleman."
He looked up when a voice came over the loudspeaker. It caused him to jump in his seat a little. Teddy was always a bit apprehensive about flying, and this meant they'd soon be taking off. When the flight attendant finished going through her list of things, he relaxed back into his seat. Melody was soon talking to him though. He turned his attention back to her. Again, he did not wish to be rude. A lady deserved his full attention. "I'm not bothered by it," Teddy said. He was not particularly fond of getting to know new people, but Melody seemed different than any other stranger. "So why are you headed for the Bahamas, Melody?" he asked. Usually he was not this chatty, but he supposed it never hurt to come out of one's shell every so often.

Thankfully Teddy wasn't upset that she hadn't heard him; that eased her social anxiety. Something about the firm handshake made Melody happy; maybe because it wasn't weak like most handshakes? Plus it showed some trustworthiness and confidence. Melody could only hope she returned the firm grip before letting go; lingering the handshake would have been awkward. She blushed when she heard her name in his accent and smiled again. "It really is," she said. Okay, was Teddy nervous, too? Nah, she was just looking too much into the whole situation. When Teddy jumped, though, Melody couldn't be so sure now. "I almost jumped, too," she said with a chuckle. Why she'd said that, she wasn't sure. It was true, but she didn't know why she'd shared it.
Good. So maybe they could have a conversation. As hard as Melody found it to trust and open up to most people, Teddy was an exception for some reason. "Neither am I," she said. The relief she felt when Teddy started the conversation was extensive. There was her name again! Say my name again, she thought to herself. WHOA. Slow down there… She cleared her throat to try and clear the thought from her head. "It was a graduation gift." She left her parents out of it; she wouldn't let them spoil this conversation. "I mean I hate flying, but I like going different places. Although nothing will ever beat home for me." Was she rambling? It felt like she was rambling. She brushed a piece of hair from her face nervously. "So uh, what about you, Teddy? Finally get sick of all the rain in England?" Now that question slipped past her brain; she didn't even remember thinking of it. What if he didn't live in England anymore? This might get awkward fast.

His lips turned up into a wide grin. "I'm glad someone else thinks so. On the flight over from London, not one single person bothered to introduce themselves to me," Teddy said, shaking his head at the thought. It saddened him that people forgot to do such simple things. Teddy blushed when Melody said she nearly jumped as well. That meant she saw that. The last thing he wanted was for her to think he was a scared of everything. True, many things made him jump, and he was more sensitive than most men. But Teddy like to think, when it came down to it, that he'd protect the ones he loved even if it meant facing his worst fear. No, he wasn't brave and gallant, but he did care about people, and he didn't like to see others hurt. "I absolutely abhor flying," he said, beginning to feel his chest tighten as the plane began to lift off.
He gave her another grin. "Good, good," he said. He was beginning to panic a bit inside though. He was never good at small talk, and he was even worse at talking to women. He wanted to talk with Melody, but he was afraid he'd make a total idiot out of himself. It had happened before. The sight had not been pretty. "What are you graduating from?" Teddy asked. This girl could not be in high school. There was just no way! She looked far too old for that. But then again, nothing was impossible. God, he hoped she wasn't in high school. That would suck for him. "Totally agree with that statement," Theodore said. While he liked the United States well enough, England was where home was. He had lived there for so long, he couldn't imagine himself anywhere else.
His eyes followed her hand as she went to brush a piece of hair out of her face. She had really pretty hair, the type that he wouldn't mind running his fingers through. What in God's name are you thinking Teddy?! You hardly even know this person, he thought to himself. Then again, was it really a crime, admiring a woman's beauty? He didn't think so, especially since he wasn't expressing any of these thoughts out loud. "I actually quite like the rain," he said. Teddy always slept easier when there was a gentle drizzle coming from the sky. It relaxed him. "I wanted to see America. Many of my favorite writers are American. The plan was to come here for the summer and then head back home, but I won this week long vacation at the Bahamas," he said.

Oh, so he was from England. Melody quietly let out a breath she'd been holding and frowned at the rest of Theodore's statement. "That's rude, but unfortunately not surprising now-a-days." She noticed his blush and smiled, feeling kind of bad for letting him know that she'd seen him jump. When the plane began to take off, Melody closed her eyes and inhaled quickly as she grabbed the armrest tightly. She vaguely heard Theodore's words but she opened her eyes and smiled as best as she could at the moment. It made her feel more understood when Theodore said he abhorred flying, too. "Me too; it's so nerve-wracking." But talking would get her mind off of it so she needed to keep herself from withdrawing and closing her eyes again. Actually, Theodore's smile was helping her feel a bit better. "High school," she deadpanned. But in a few seconds she giggled. "Sorry, no. I just graduated from college. But sometimes I get mistaken for a high schooler." She shrugged. It never really bothered her when people thought she was younger than she was; she'd definitely appreciate when she was older. She grinned when Theodore agreed with her. "Really? That's awesome!" A bit too enthusiastic? But it was genuine… She brushed her hair back and took a breath. "I mean- it's nice to meet someone who agrees with me. Most of the people I talk to always say they'd love to quit work and just travel all the time." She wrinkled her nose at the idea. "I'd love to go to England, though. And Ireland! Someday…" In all honesty she'd have preferred a ticket to either England or Ireland but her parents actually remembered that she loved the beach and used to talk about the Bahamas so at least the gift had been heartfelt. She was excited, though, really.
Her eyes widened slightly and her mouth tightened a bit when Theodore hadn't reacted to her joke. Had he been offended? Or had he just missed the fact that it had been a joke? Should she say anything? She didn't want to ruin the opportunity to talk to him. "Oh! Well- that's good! I like the rain, too, in moderation. Florida rains can get pretty heavy so the air pressure gets to be a bit much at times but other than that…" She gave him an apologetic smile and rolled her eyes. "You probably don't care… What I said about England and the rain, I hope you know that was a joke. It might not have sounded like it- I know sometimes I sound serious when I mean to be playful. I just didn't want to offend you." Wow her heart was beating really fast. And was she sweating now? Great. Just what she needed.
Being a proud American, Melody was thrilled to hear that Theodore had favorite American writers. "Oh, that's cool! I've never one anything like that. I don't what I'd do if I did." She laughed. "What writers do you like?"
